Natural and organic cosmetics are becoming increasingly popular as more people become aware of the consequences of applying harsh chemicals to their skin on a daily basis. In addition, many consumers are becoming concerned with impact cosmetic products have on the environment during their production.

As a result, the demand for organic cosmetics has shot up and off the charts in recent years. Organic cosmetics are produced using only the purest and completely natural organic ingredients and so are ideal for those with sensitive skin and chemical allergies.

Some conventional cosmetics contain the same ingredients that can be found in industrial cleaning products. After using these chemical-laden cosmetics, wearers may find they have dry or irritated skin and dermatitis, among other skin conditions. Organic cosmetics do not contain these harsh chemicals and therefore are much safer and healthier for your skin.

Organic cosmetics look and perform the same function as conventional cosmetics such as lipsticks, lip balms, blush, eye shadow, mascara and foundation. Most organic cosmetics products can actually enhance the appearance of your skin simply by applying them as makeup.

For example, mineral makeup contains ingredients that nurture your skin and can restore its lustre. Mineral foundation will give the appearance of a smoother complexion while the organic ingredients in the formula provide your skin with the vitamins and minerals it needs to look its best, even when you’re not wearing any cosmetics at all.

The best way to preserve your own natural beauty is to use these 100 % natural concoctions. Our ginger skin crème recipe will lovingly restore lustre to damaged skin.

Ginger Skin Crème

Ginger restores radiance and natural beauty to skin, and oil soothes tired, damaged skin. Use these quantities for normal skin or double it for dry skin sufferers.

1 inch piece of fresh ginger
1 teaspoons light sesame oil
1 teaspoons apricot kernel oil
1 teaspoons vitamin E oil
¼ cup cocoa butter

Preheat oven on low.
Finely grate the ginger just enough so that you have about 1/8 teaspoon of ginger liquid.
To obtain the ginger liquid, squeeze the freshly grated ginger into a small bowl.
Place all the ingredients in a glass bowl or container and heat in the oven until the cocoa butter is melted and the oils are combined.
Pour into a clean, dry container and store in a cool dry place such as a cupboard.
You can add a few drops of orange or other essential oil for a nice, scented twist.

Honey Lavender Body Bath

3 tablespoons dried lavender flowers (Found in the spice section of health stores)
1 1/2 cups cream
1/3 cup honey

Process lavender flowers in a blender until they are a fine powder.
Whisk the lavender powder, milk and honey in a glass bowl and transfer into a jar.
Before use, shake the jar and pour half of the mixture into a running bath.
Cover and store in the refrigerator for up to one week.
This quantity makes enough for two baths.

It has been estimated that the average woman will apply up to 14 different skin care and cosmetic products to her body and face each day, and virtually all of those will have a cocktail of chemicals in their ingredients.

Unfortunately, there are many beauty brands that will market their products as being ‘natural’ or ‘chemical-free’ cosmetics. Although each country has strict labelling laws on the use of these terms, a consumer can never be too sure of what exactly they are putting on their skin.

Don’t let the vague names fool you, here are the top four ingredients to avoid when shopping for chemical free cosmetics:

1.	Mineral Oil: this petrochemical derived ingredient is extensively used in cosmetics as it helps prevent moisture loss in skin. While it sounds useful, it is actually one of the most damaging synthetic ingredients that will prevent the skin from breathing normally by creating an occlusive layer.

2.	Parabens: note the name, because this bad boy can be found in millions of cosmetics products world wide. Chemical-free cosmetics should not include any ingredient that is some variation of the word ‘paraben’. Parabens have demonstrated dangerous oestrogen-mimicking activity that disrupts the body’s normal hormonal levels. It has also been associated with cancer-causing cells.

3.	Sodium Laurel Sulphate: this foaming agent is more commonly found in toothpastes, shampoos and foaming cleansers than in cosmetics, but those looking for chemical-free cosmetics should also be wary. Trials have shown that sodium laurel sulphate can increase dehydration and skin irritation.

4.	Phthalates: these synthetics should never appear in the ingredients list of a product that labels itself ‘chemical-free’. Phthalates can interfere with reproductive tissues in both males and females and in some cases cause infertility and birth defects.

Can a cosmetics company ever make money when it’s not sold in stores? You betcha. Mary Kay cosmetics is a prime example of the kind of brand that has gained success through old-fashioned word of mouth for having high quality products for genuinely low prices.

The May Kay cosmetics brand was established in 1963 and today offers over 200 different cosmetics and beauty products that suit all ages, ethnic origins and skin types. Instead of shopping for cosmetics in department stores and pharmacies, Mary Kay sales representatives will travel to your home and perform a free demonstration of the products.

The success of Mary Kay cosmetics lies in the outstanding quality of the products and their prices. The majority of Mary Kay cosmetics are priced around the same as those in pharmacies and supermarkets, however their quality is superior. The colours are true to their packaging, and the makeup itself is long-lasting and rarely requires a touch up.

Another reason for the popularity of Mary Kay’s product line is due to the social responsibility of the brand itself. Unlike other high-end brands, Mary Kay cosmetics are animal cruelty-free. The brand itself often donates to a range of charities and relief funds. For example, in February 2009, Mary Kay donated a portion of the profit from its mascara sales to the Australian Red Cross’ bushfire and disaster relief fund to assist victims of the Victorian bushfires.

One feature that sets cosmetics brands apart from their competitors is whether or not they perform animal testing with their products. Many consumers will opt for cosmetics products that specifically state they are animal cruelty free in manufacture, but this claim has its limitations.

Unfortunately, cosmetics usually require a range of different ingredients sourced from all over the world. While a cosmetics company can guarantee their putting together of the final product has not been subject to animal testing, the same cannot be said of the individual ingredients as they travel up the supply chain.

Although animal cruelty free labelling has strict definitions of the terms ‘not tested on animals’ or ‘against animal testing’, the packaging itself isn’t specifically regulated in some countries.

It’s not all bad news for animal-loving consumers. In 2008, governments of the EU and beauty industry groups came together to determine some new means of testing new cosmetics that phases out acute toxicity tests in 2009. Some of the new alternatives include using in vitro techniques, donated human organs and synthetic and reconstructed human skin.

To ensure you are only buying animal cruelty free cosmetics, look for those that have Choose Cruelty Free (CCF) accreditation on their packaging. These brands will have signed an official declaration against animal testing. In some cases, CCF accredited brands are also vegan-friendly.

Very few females will go through life without using cosmetics to enhance their natural appearance. Camouflage cosmetics such as foundations, colour correctors and concealers are all different products that are used to give an individual a clearer, flawless complexion.

Camouflage cosmetics are broken into the following categories:

Concealers: a concealer is thicker and heavier than foundation makeup as it is used to cover more noticeable flaws on the face, such as pimples, scars, blemishes, marks and birthmarks. You should choose a concealer that is creamy and smooth to apply but will not rub off easily. Many people start their makeup regime by applying concealer under their eyes to hide dark circles or wrinkles.

Colour Correctors: to reduce discolourations in skin, a colour corrector is needed. They are used to disguise redness such as from acne blemishes or scarring. Green correction fluid or cream is used to reduce the appearance of redness in skin, whereas lavender correction makeup works for yellow tinges.

Foundations: foundation is used last of all the camouflage cosmetics. Foundations vary in thickness and coverage but will give the wearer a clearer complexion. After applying concealers and colour correcting products, foundation can be applied across the entire face to achieve the most flawless-looking skin. Foundations should be selected depending on the type of skin: dry, oily, acne-prone, aged, combination or sensitive.

What are the advantages of permanent cosmetics?
Many individuals choose to undergo permanent cosmetics procedures for a range of reasons. Apart from not having to worry about smudged or faded makeup, there are many practical reasons for permanent cosmetics. People who have difficulty applying makeup due to disability or another physical limitation are often candidates for permanent cosmetics, as are athletes and those with busy lifestyles who want to look their best at all times. Permanent cosmetics are also ideal for people with a disease, disability or other illness that prohibits them applying makeup traditionally, such as the vision impaired, those who wear contact lenses, and those who suffer allergies from conventional makeup.

What is permanent cosmetic camouflage?
Permanent cosmetic camouflage is a method of removing, correcting or improving the appearance of skin blemishes, scars and other flaws. Micropigmentation is one procedure that can be performed by permanent cosmetics professionals for those who wish to improve the overall appearance of their skin to reduce the need to apply foundation every day.

While many cosmetics brands claim to use ‘natural’ ingredients in their products, this does not necessarily mean they are natural cosmetics.

The term Natural is generally defined by dictionaries as:

Free from artificiality; existing in or formed by nature

However, the cosmetic industry defines it as:

Any ingredient derived from a natural substance

As a result, there are many so-called ‘natural cosmetics’ on the world beauty market masquerading as natural products when they are actually quite the opposite.

We often see long chemical names followed by the phrase “derived from coconut oil” listed in the ingredients of our cosmetics products.

In actual fact, any product that lists its ingredients as being derived from coconut oil would require a harmful synthetic chemical known as diethanolamine (DEA), and is therefore no longer ‘natural’.

With so many cosmetics products, how can we tell what are truly natural cosmetics? The best way is to conduct research on the natural cosmetics you wish to purchase before you commit to buying them. Wary consumers across the world have compiled a list of dangerous ingredients that can be found in many popular ‘natural cosmetics’ brands and their products.

Knowing what these ingredients are and reading the labels of all your potential purchases before buying is the smartest way to protecting your face from dangerous chemicals and synthetic ingredients.

Cosmetic addicts are expected to arrive in droves when the new MAC Colour Ready Collection is released in department stores on April 2, 2009. The new product line from the outstanding MAC cosmetics company is said to take the best of the old and combine it with new and exciting products.

The collection will introduce the brand spanking new range of Prep + Prime products including a line filler, finishing powder and skin refiner. As the name suggests, Prep + Prime guarantees your makeup will look more amazing and last longer than ever before. A big call, coming from the company that revolutionised the terms ‘hard wearing’ and ‘long-lasting’ in cosmetics land.

The skin refiner and liner will go on invisibly, but will actually keep your makeup bold and in place for hours later. MAC cosmetics claims that the Prep + Prime skin refiner actually reduces the appearance of pores and wrinkles, while the finishing powder holds all your makeup in place all day (and night) long.
